Come in and learn more about our classroom!
This will be an exciting year for our 5th
Grade students! The highlight of our year will be the
reception of the Sacrament of Confirmation!
In
Religion Class we will prepare for
Confirmation. We also present the Living Stations during
Lent. Every year our students work on a "Mary Project" and a "Saint
Project". These projects involve research and study as well as an expression in
art of what the students learned. The Religion curriculum for grade 5 includes study
of the sacraments, prayer, God the Father, Christ, Holy Spirit, and the Church.
Reading We use the same reading series
as the 4th grade. Almost every week the students will read a selection from the
textbook and will be assigned a comprehension worksheet. After a full class discussion the
next day, the students will be given a quiz over the selection. Each week the
students will learn a new skill or will review a skill according to the 5th
grade curriculum. Some examples of these skills would be
fact/opinion, similes, generalizing, etc.
Extra
credit is EASILY earned by participating in our librarys programs,
such as "Read to Win" and "Books and Beyond". Points rewarded are
based on the students progress within the program.
VOCABULARY Each week the students will learn 6-8
new vocabulary words based on the reading textbook weekly selection. These vocabulary
words will be discussed & defined in class. The students are responsible for looking
up and writing definitions for all the words in their copybooks. All of the weeks
vocabulary will be included on the comprehension quiz.
We will sharpen our
skills in Math with work in place value, decimals,
fractions, and division and multiplication of larger numbers.
In English we work on: 6-trait
writing, parts of speech, and we will research different types of literature!
The 5th grade Social Studies
curriculum is based on U.S.
history. We spend a short time discussing U.S.geography, but most of the year we learn
about historical events and people - from the Ice Age all the way to the 1960s - obviously
at a fairly rapid pace. We do stick very closely to the Lincoln Diocese 5th grade Social
Studies curriculum guidelines. An average day in Social Studies would be reading &
discussing most of a chapter's lesson in class, finishing the lesson individually &
completing a reinforcement activity based
Our students will participate in the Science Fair.
We also study matter, simple living things, weather, plants, and the environment.
