We do several
group projects in Science and Social Studies throughout the year.
 |
In early October, the project is an animal habitat that must include the Four Basic Needs
of Survival: food, water, shelter, and appropriate space.
|
 |
The students then research how Christmas is celebrated in another country, and present
this to their classmates and parents before the Christmas break.
|
 |
The Third Grade students are also
encouraged to present a project at the annual Science Fair
that is held each January during Catholic Schools Week.

RELIGION

SOCIAL STUDIES

A major theme in Third Grade Social Studies is Communities. We learn about
the first communities, the geography of communities, and urban, rural, and suburban
communities. We also study community government... rules, laws, and how decisions
are made. We participate in Junior Achievement and discuss such things as zoning
and the other things that go on in communities.
ENGLISH
The
parts of speech are taught in English class, as well as sentence and punctuation. We
also do LOTS of story writing!
PHONICS
In phonics we study vowels and consonants, syllables, alphabetizing, contractions,
suffixes and prefixes, and synonyms and antonyms!
READING
During our reading class we sharpen our phonics skills. We cover two basal
books during the year. We also read and discuss some Chapter books.
SCIENCE
It's a year of discovery in the area of science! We study animals,
embryology, weather, habitats, nutrition, the sun and the moon,
matter, sound and light, plants and simple machines!
ENRICHMENT!
Besides all of our classroom activities, we also go to "specialty classes" that
enrich us! These include Art, Computer, The Library, Physical Education (twice a
week!), and Vocal Music. Our Spanish teacher comes to our room for class every week
as well!
