St. Joseph Holding Young Jesus

Over the summer of 2001, our school was rewired for networking.  This needed to be done to accommodate the new addition, and the additional computers we have added to each classroom.  When the above picture was taken, we were still  in the process of organizing the data room... and all of those wires!

These are some of the wires that first connected our computers to one another, and to the World Wide Web!  We will always be grateful to the volunteers (see some of them in the pictures below) who have made this wonderful technology possible.

In the fall of 1995 Sister Anne Joelle, Principal of St. Joseph School, called for volunteers to assist her in assessing the short and long-term technology needs of the school. Thus the Technology Committee, comprised of interested faculty, parents, and parishioners, was formed. Our philosophy is that technology is an integral part of effective educational programs; it should challenge students to reach higher levels of achievement in all subjects. It should also be used as a resource for faculty in developing curriculum as well as helping our teachers and staff make more productive use of time. Technology includes ordinary teaching tools such as overhead projectors, cable television, video tape players and recorders, audio tape players and recorders, computers, printers and software. It includes the Internet, multi-media computers, intra-school networking, computer to TV converters, computer projectors, networked CD-ROM drives, software and other innovative teaching equipment.
Our volunteers have put in the wiring needed for cable television and the World Wide Web. So our school is now fully "networked", with one to three computers in every classroom! The access to e-mail our teachers enjoy has aided in communication between teachers, administrators, parents, as well as classrooms and professionals from around the world.
Thanks to our parents, parishioners, and very generous corporate grants, we have multimedia computers in every classroom.  Every grade level as well as the art room and computer lab have 32" Panasonic televisions mounted on the wall.   Special hardware allows a computer to be displayed on these televisions, which makes it possible for all students to see at one time.  Teachers can then make use of Power Point and the Internet for presentations.  Our plan is to have similarly equipped televisions in every classroom in the near future.
We also have a computer lab with 29 computers and a full time computer specialist!

Because our Library is completely automated, our students are able to check out even more books than before!  Our card catalogue is on the computer, and there are computer research stations for student use.
